What landscaping and lawn care cost
Published national ranges for landscape design and installation, new sod and seed, artificial turf, sprinklers, mowing and lawn care, flower beds and mulch, yard and leaf cleanup, soil and rock, and yard drainage and grading.
On this page: 11 sections
The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes. Each one is a range at least two independent sources agree on, and a site that repeats another's figures counts once. Use them to check a price, then ask landscapers and lawn care companies near you to look at your yard and quote the job.
How to read these prices
Most installs are priced by the square foot of the area worked, a French drain by the linear foot, and the rest for the whole job, as each row says. Lawn care is priced by the visit, the application, the treatment, the month or the year, as each row says. A per-visit price times a season's visits isn't a yearly price: where a yearly figure exists, it's its own row. Soil and rock are priced as material, before delivery.

Drainage and grading
What moves the price
Fixr names these for each job:
- New landscaping. The scope of the project. On a whole acre, Fixr says it mostly depends on your plans and how much of the space is being developed.4
- Sod. The size of the lawn, the type of grass, the shape of the area, the prep work the land needs and anything in the way.7
- Seeding. The size of the lawn, the type of grass and the seeding method.13
- Artificial turf. The size of the lawn, the turf and what the installation needs.15
- A sprinkler system. The type of system, the size of the yard and the number of zones.18
- Sprinkler repair. The type of system, which parts are damaged and labor rates.21
- Aeration. The size and condition of the lawn, the prep work, the method, the slope, and add-ons such as fertilizer or seeding.30
- Weed control. The size of the lawn, the control method and the type of weed.39
- Flower beds. The size of the bed, the materials and the plants you pick.41
- Cleanups. The size of the yard, the services you need and how often. For leaves, also the cleaning method.47, 51
- A French drain. The drain's length and depth and where it goes.63
- Grading. The size of the yard, how steep it is and the soil. How much fill dirt has to come in and how much ground has to be cut away to level it matter too.57
Prices we don't give
- A whole landscaping project. The cost guides price projects of different scopes, so we give the price per square foot instead.
- A sprinkler system for a quarter-acre yard, or by the zone. For a quarter acre, the cost guides' figures don't agree closely enough for us to give one, and only one cost guide we could count prices a zone.
- A new lawn from seed, and resodding an existing lawn. Each is priced the same way by only one cost guide we could count.
- Planting a shrub. Only one cost guide prices it.
- Delivery, truckloads, sand, gravel, and mulch delivered but not spread. Either only one cost guide prices them or the cost guides repeat one another's figures. The soil and rock prices above are for the material only.
- Grading a whole yard as one price. No two cost guides price the same size of yard.
- Hourly rates. We haven't checked them across cost guides.
- Patios, walls and other hardscaping, landscape lighting and snow removal. We don't have checked ranges for these yet.
What to ask before work starts
- What the price includes: taking out the old lawn, preparing and grading the soil, and hauling away what comes out.
- Whether soil, mulch or rock is priced with delivery and spreading, or as material only.
- For lawn care, how many visits or applications the price covers, and what each visit includes.
- Who gets the permit, if your town needs one for the job.
- Whether the company is licensed or registered where your state asks for it. How to check a landscaper or lawn care company has each state's rule.
Each company on this site is listed with its phone number where it has one, so you can call two or three and compare. You can also send a request through the request form.
